CARTIER•REVERSIBLE
Among the many interpretations of the Tank created by Cartier throughout the 20th century, the Tank Reversible holds a particularly distinctive place. Produced in very limited numbers and for a relatively short period, it combines one of the Maison’s most iconic designs with the ingenious concept of a reversible case.
The idea can be traced back to Cartier’s experiments with reversible watches in the 1930s. Several decades later, during the 1970s, the Maison introduced its own interpretation with the Tank Reversible: a case designed to pivot sideways, allowing the watch to be completely turned over and the dial concealed behind a solid gold surface. This construction notably differs from that of the Tank Basculante, which uses a different rotating mechanism.
This particular example dates from 1977 and is the highly desirable GM, or Large Size, measuring 24 × 33 mm. Generous proportions for the period give the watch a remarkably contemporary presence on the wrist while preserving the refinement and elegance associated with Cartier.
Crafted in 18-carat yellow gold, the reversible case allows the dial to disappear entirely when turned over, revealing a polished gold back. Originally conceived as a practical way of protecting the dial and crystal, the mechanism also gives the watch an almost jewel-like character.
The white dial, signed “Cartier Paris”, displays the Maison’s unmistakable aesthetic codes, with black Roman numerals, a railway minute track and blued-steel hands. The overall composition is quintessentially Cartier: restrained, graphic and immediately recognisable.
Inside is a manually wound mechanical movement, perfectly suited to the elegance and slender proportions of this 1970s creation. The watch is completed by a leather strap and a Cartier deployant clasp in 18-carat gold, a particularly desirable detail on vintage examples.
Rarely encountered on the market and never established as a permanent model within Cartier’s collection, the Tank Reversible is a fascinating expression of the Maison’s creativity during the 1970s: an unmistakable Tank, transformed by an entirely unexpected construction.
